Before we get into what are the symptoms of diabetes and what treatment one should take to cure diabetes, it is important to understand what exactly is diabetes and how it is caused.
Your body digests simple sugars and refined carbohydrates such as white rice and white flour rapidly, causing a spike in blood glucose. While some of this sugar is used for immediate use, the excess is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. This process of conversion from glucose to glycogen requires the pancreas to release more insulin. When your body has more glucose than it needs for energy and has reached its storage capacity for glycogen, the increased insulin prompts the liver to convert glucose into triglycerides, which are then transported to fat cells.
Insulin is produced by beta cells in the Islands of Langerhans in the pancreas. If for some reason, the quantity of the beta cells falls or they become inactive, in that case, the secretion of insulin goes down. This then hampers the process of conversion of glucose to glycogen and raises the level of blood sugar. This is the main reason for diabetes.
Excessive thirst
Excessive hunger
Urinating at short intervals
Boils erupting every now and then
Dry skin / itchy skin
Wounds taking a long time to heal
Joint pains
Eye problems
Constipation
TB
Weakness
Nervousness
Kidney problems
High BP
Before I go any further, let me mention that unlike general perception, diabetes can be very easily & very quickly cured using methods and practices that rely on nature.
Avoid processed foods - Processed foods get converted to sugar really fast. On the other hand, foods with fibre convert to sugar much more slowly. So you must avoid foods such as those made with maida (wheat flour), including biscuits, bread, sandwich, burgers, pizza, samosa, kachori, confectionery items such as pastry and cake.
It is generally thought that diabetics should not take sweet fruits such as banana, mango, etc. In my opinion, natural sugar contained in fruits cannot harm. Because they are accompanied with plenty of fibre, the body releases sugar in the bloodstream only very gradually. As a matter of caution, if sugar levels are higher than 200 (without medication or insulin), one could avoid these fruits.
While proteins are good for a diabetic patient, it is preferable to first sprout them, grind them (along with grains) and make aata out of that. This makes them much more easily digestible. However, in case of high levels of uric acid, one should avoid proteins. Moreover, proteins are relatively more difficult to digest. Diabetes being a disease of the digestive system, one should take food that is easy to digest.
Foods that are good for a diabetic:
Karela (bitter gourd)
Green leafy vegetables
Methi (fenugreek)
Lehsun (garlic)
Jamun (Indian blackberry) fruit, powdered seeds and leaves
Leaves of sadabahar
Leaves of bael
Tulsi leaves
Fresh neem leaves and nimboli
Juice of any of the following - safed petha (ash gourd), kheera (cucumber), kakdi, lauki (bottle gourd)
Foods that a diabetic should avoid:
Maida (wheat flour) and all foods made with maida such as sandwich, burger, etc.
Besan (gram flour)
White sugar, confectionery items.
Tea & coffee - instead of tea, you could make your own concoction that has ginger (adrak), dalchini (cinnamon), laung (cloves), elaichi (cardamom), black pepper, lemongrass, tulsi, giloy. You could also add arjun ki chhal (bark of the arjun tree) as that tends to clean the arteries and lower blood pressure.
Milk (curd and buttermilk though are fine)
Salt (avoiding salt will also be good for reducing blood pressure)
Spicy food and masalas (avoiding masalas will also be good for the heart)
Rules for drinking water:
Increase water intake in the morning. One should have at least 2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up, before rinsing your mouth. The morning saliva is rich in antibacterial properties and so that saliva should go into the stomach. Preferably, store water in a copper jar and drink that water as soon as you wake up.
Mix 1 lemon with the 2 glasses of water in the morning.
Drink water very slowly. Keep it in your mouth and roll it for some time so that it mixes with saliva. Human saliva is alkaline in nature and therefore helps reduce acidity in the body.
Water should not be colder than body temperature. Because of the above, water kept in the refrigerator should be avoided.
Drink water at least 45 minutes before meals and at least 1.5 hours after meals. Drinking water during meals should be strictly avoided. This could cause digestion problems and therefore a build up of toxins in the body.
Lukewarm water mixed with lemon juice when you wake up. Have at least 2 glasses. Also have lemon water (without sugar) during the day.
Have 30 leaves of neem after having water. Preferably take the new leaves, when available.
After the morning walk, have a glass of juice. Juice of white petha (ash gourd) is best. If that is not available, then have lauki (bottle gourd) juice. You can also have wheatgrass juice which is also very good for reducing blood sugar. You could also have water with Vijaysar wood soaked in water overnight or cut bhindi kept in water overnight.
Breakfast - Tomatoes with buttermilk (chhach). Alternatively, you could have fruits for breakfast. It is best to have only one fruit. However, if you wish to have a mix of fruits, then sour fruits should not be mixed with sweet fruits.
It would be best if you sprout wheat, dry in the sun and then grind that into daliya and aata. Have roti for lunch and daliya in the evening. The process of sprouting increases vitamins and minerals and makes the food much easier to digest.
You must take danamethi about 20 minutes before lunch and dinner. Danamethi is a wonder food as far as diabetes is concerned. It should start showing its effect within about 10 days. Take about 25 - 50 grams of danamethi before lunch with chhach and before dinner with water.
Lunch - Around 11 o’ clock, have salads first. Tomatoes are a must. Boiled vegetables and 1 to 2 rotis made with atta with the chokar (fibre). Fibre in the food ensures that the body absorbs sugar slowly. For vegetables, preferably have karela (bitter gourd) everyday. If that is not possible, then any other green vegetable but try to have karela as often as possible. Also have other leafy vegetables such as lettuce, palak (preferably raw). These are found to have insulin like chemicals. Have some curd for lunch.
Dinner - daliya (made in the manner mentioned in point 5), boiled vegetables, and salads (again tomatoes are a must).
Have triphla for 3 days continuously every 10 days.
Tomatoes and leafy vegetables - Have as much of tomatoes and leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce.
Jamun (Indian blackberry) - Jamun is a fruit that can significantly reduce diabetes. So during its season, have lots of jamun. Do not throw the seeds of jamun away. Dry them. Also grind some karela after drying them. Mix the two in equal quantities and have 1 teaspoon of the powder every morning and evening with water.
Other foods - Increase intake of other foods such as amla (Indian gooseberry), lehsun (garlic). Amla helps in better absorption of nutrients and garlic helps reduce blood sugar.
As mentioned above, diabetes is a disease of the digestive system. Therefore, all such treatment that improves the digestive system will be very helpful. For this purpose, a hot cold fomentation, mud pack, enema, hip bath, hot water foot bath, steam bath will be very helpful.
Exercise / Yoga / Pranayama
Walking is a very good exercise for a diabetic. However, a few things that you should do before you go walking:
Massage / wipe the stomach with a wet cloth. This will activate the liver and pancreas and so would be very good for you. Taking kati snan (hip bath) will be even better.
Take a leg gush. Pour cold tap water on the knees, both on the front as well as the back portion.
While walking, take deep long breaths.
Yog Asanas should be helpful. Diabetes is a disease of the digestive system. Therefore, in general, all those asanas that stretch the abdomen should be beneficial for a diabetic. In particular, the following asanas are very good for those with diabetes:
Ardha Matsyendrasana
Pashchimottanasan
Naukasan
Chakrasan
Halasan
Vajrasan
Bhujangasan
Shirshasan
Uddiyan Bandh
Do note that the following asanas should either not be done or should be done slowly with care and caution if a diabetic patient also has high blood pressure. This is because they can increase blood pressure. If one gets tired or feels nervous or breathless, immediately stop doing these asanas.
Surya namaskar
Sarvangasana
Halasan
Dhanurasana
Shirshasana
Chakrasana
Pranayama
Suryabhedi pranayama
Anulom vilom
