Parkinson’s disease (Parkinsonism) is marked by the presence of certain recognizable symptoms. These include uncontrollable shaking or tremor, lack of coordination, and speaking difficulties. However, symptoms vary and may worsen as the disease progresses.
The main symptoms of Parkinson’s include:
uncontrollable shaking and tremors
slowed movement (bradykinesia)
balance difficulties and eventual problems standing up
stiffness in limbs
Dementia or loss of memory
Posture issues where the body may start bending over to one side.
Stooping posture
Difficulty in swallowing food (resulting in the food going into the wind pipe)
Constipation
While modern science suggests that there is no cure for Parkinson’s, nothing can be far from the truth than that. If not finding a permanent cure, our ancient healing systems such as ayurveda, naturopathy, acupressure can surely help reverse the disease such that the patient can lead a self-dependent life.
So what can be done to find a cure for Parkinson’s. Essentially, Parkinson’s is a situation where the link between the brain and the body is broken. This is the reason why people with Parkinson’s are unable to walk properly, balance properly, they fall at times, they lose control over their muscles, etc. Accordingly, in a nutshell, we need to do everything that can restore this link. I have given below the line of treatment in terms of the following:
Natural treatment
Food
Lifestyle
Detoxification of the body – After practicing naturopathy for more than 20 years, I now know that all diseases happen because of the presence of toxins in the body. Therefore, the first thing that needs to be done is the detoxification of the body. For this purpose, enema is a very effective remedy. Before taking enema, ensure that you take hot cold fomentation so that loosens the intestines. To begin with, enema should be taken continuously for the first 3 days. Thereafter, it could be reduced to once a week.
Exposure to the Sun – The Indians have known since time immemorial that the Sun is a cure for multiple diseases. It is not for any other reason that the Sun is referred to as the “Sun God”. Exposure to the Sun could be very beneficial in Parkinson’s. This could be for 2 reasons:
Sweat induced by the Sun will release toxins from the body. Make sure that you take a shower after a Sun bath. It would be preferable to take a cold water shower. However, if that stiffens the muscles, then one could take a shower in lukewarm water.
It should increase blood circulation which should improve mental activity.
Moreover, Vitamin D has been demonstrated to protect against Parkinson’s.
However, 2 precautions need to be taken:
The head should not be exposed to the Sun. If that is not possible, then pour cold water on the head before you sit in the Sun and keep a wet towel on the head.
About half an hour in the Sun should be sufficient. Of course, that would also depend on the intensity of the Sun. Therefore, I would expect you to exercise discretion over the duration.
Massage during Sun exposure – In general, a massage would be good for a Parkinson’s patient for the following reasons:
It will further intensify sweating and improve blood circulation.
It will reduce stiffness in the muscles.
Massaging with coconut oil will be good (See Annexure 1 for the benefits of coconut oil).
Full body hot water bath – A full body hot water bath (the temperature of the water should be around 38 degrees Celsius) has been found to be very effective. It would be even better if about a kg of Epsom salt is mixed in the water. If this is not available, table salt or even a plain water bath should be quite effective. The duration should be for about 30 minutes. During the 1st week, the bath could be taken every day. Thereafter, it could be reduced to every alternative day. Before you take the bath, take the following precautions so that heat does not enter the head:
Drink about 2 glasses of water.
Wet your head with cold water.
Place a cold towel on the head.
If a tub is not available in the house to take a full body bath, one could start with the foot bath. This too should be very effective. Pour warm water in a bucket. Open all your clothes except the underwear. Sit down on a stool and wrap the body with a blanket (in order to induce sweat). (Note that the blanket should also cover the bucket.) Now put both your feet in the bucket with warm water. Keep massaging the body with both your friends so as to induce sweat. All 3 precautions mentioned above must be adopted. Do this for about 20 minutes. If the water becomes cold, add some more warm water.
Once the full body / foot bath is taken, take a shower. After the shower, rub the body with a rough cloth. You will observe that a lot of toxins come out. If the body is yet sweating, take a cold water shower once again to wash away all the sweat. Sweat is the toxic waste that comes out through the sweat glands and therefore it is very important to wash away all the sweat.
Precaution:
Heart patients should be cautious. If at any point in time, they feel uncomfortable, they should immediately stop and take a cold water shower.
Hip bath (Kati snan) – Kati snan is very effective in improving digestion, which should in turn help reduce the effects of Parkinson’s. While there is a particular tub that is required for taking kati snan, one could also take kati snan in tubs that we use to wash clothes.
Take a large tub and fill normal temperature water in it such that when we sit in the tub, the water covers the portion up until the naval. Now, using your hand or a rough cloth, rub the area around the naval from right to left. The colon (large intestine) runs from right to left. This should strengthen the colon and thereby improve motions. Many Parkinson’s patients complain of constipation. This should be very helpful in relieving constipation. Do this for about 15 minutes.
Yoga / Pranayama – This will have an amazing effect on the body. Especially pranayama should be very helpful. Amongst yogasanas, virbhadrasana and balasana should be effective. Also, standing on one leg, wrist curls, no contact boxing, stretching the arms up and down should be good. If the patient is not strong enough, 2 things can surely be done very easily.
Deep breathing – Deep breathing will increase oxygen in the brain, which should help.
Bhramari Pranayama – This is known to improve serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, and it is in fact the lack of dopamine that is responsible for causing Parkinson’s. Dopamine is also known as the “happy hormone”. If nothing, it should make a person happy and joyful.
Acupressure – Acupressure should be very helpful in providing relief / reversing Parkinson’s. One needs to apply pressure on the brain points. Pressure should also be applied on the points related to the digestive system.
Fasting – In my over 20 years of experience with naturopathy, I have not found any remedy more effective than fasting. However, most / many people find themselves incapable of fasting. So I am not explaining this further.
Order of the above
Yoga / Pranayama
Enema
Sun bath
Kati snan
Full body / foot bath
No disease comes from the outside. Diseases happen only when there is a suitable environment for virus, bacteria, etc, within the body. Therefore, the air that we breathe and the food that we eat are very important. It is very important that we eat food that fills our body with pran (life giving force). With this perspective, I would suggest the following:
Eat food in a form that is as close to the form in which nature gives it to us.
As a corollary to the above, avoid processed foods.
One should completely stop the intake of sugar, maida (refined wheat flour), besan, milk and milk products. In place of sugar, honey and jaggery would be very good replacements. Jaggery has a high content of iron, which builds haemoglobin, which in turn increases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Even proteins can be avoided. In a diseased state, the digestive system needs rest. Proteins are relatively difficult to break down. If at all, you want to have proteins, then sprouted moong, moth should be best.
Remember that minerals and vitamins protect the body from disease. So, increase intake of fruits, vegetables, salads, vitamin C, honey, turmeric, coconut oil.
Keeping in mind the above, I would suggest the above:
Start the day with 2 glasses of neembu and honey. Precaution – if the patient is diabetic as well, one may have to reconsider this.
Shankhpushpi and Brahmi – These are 2 herbs that are known to be very potent brain tonics. In fact, I have just sown shankhpushpi at home yesterday (ie, August 9, 2022) to give to my father. While I do not trust anything from the market, you possibly may not have access to fresh herbs. Given this, you could source these 2 herbs from the market.
Breakfast should be just fruits. It is best to have one fruit at a time. However, one should surely not mix sweet fruits with sour fruits. If the patient is suffering with constipation, then banana could be avoided.
An hour after breakfast, take one tablespoon of cold pressed coconut oil. After a week of consuming coconut oil, this could be increased to one table spoon of cold pressed coconut oil in the morning and the evening. My father (who also has Parkinson’s) has found this to be very helpful. In fact, after changing his diet and taking natural treatment, his tremors have completely stopped. For benefits associated with consumption of coconut oil, refer to Annexure 1.
Lunch and dinner should be vegetables, salads and roti / rice. Please note the following:
Avoid deep frying vegetables. Boiled vegetables are the best.
Turmeric content in the vegetables could be increased. While I always prefer locally available foods, one could order for the Lakadong turmeric on the internet. This turmeric has been found to have the maximum curcumin content.
Rice found in the market is absolutely useless. One, the husk is removed. Two, the process of polishing rice induces chemicals into rice which then cause cough in the body. Hand pounded brown rice would be best.
Roti must be had with the chokar (fibre), which unfortunately is not there in the aata that is available in the market. Therefore, it is best that you have the grain pounded at a local chakki and then use that aata along with the chokar.
Millets are preferable over wheat.
If at all, you wish to continue eating wheat, then sprout the wheat before you have it pound. This turns a lot of the carbohydrate content (and possibly gluten) into minerals and vitamins, especially Vitamin E. This not only makes it easy to digest but also helps the body fight disease due to the higher mineral and vitamin content.
Have an early dinner. It is best to have a 3 hour gap between dinner and the time we sleep.
Juice of green leaves – Green leafy vegetables are a wonder food for Parkinson’s patients. They are not only rich in antioxidants but are also rich in iron, which helps in the production of haemoglobin, which in turn helps in transferring blood from the lungs to the tissues. You can take palak (spinach), dhaniya (coriander), paudhina (mint), meetha neem (curry leaf), or for that matter any other green leaves, mix water and churn them in the mixer to make juice. Have one glass of juice in the evening.
Avoid snacking in between. The pancreas are unable to secrete digestive juices if we eat often and therefore all that food then just rots in the body. If at all one feels hungry, fruits is what one should have.
Drink lots of water. Do not drink refrigerated water. Water kept in a matka (earthen pot) is best as it not only keeps the water cool but also makes the water alkaline. Avoid drinking water 45 minutes before meals (as that dampens appetite) and 2 hours after meals (as that would dilute the digestive juices). Do not drink water while standing.
Dab (tender coconuts) – Dab is full of minerals and vitamins. One should have 2 dabs everyday.
Wake up early in the morning – I have been told that the oxygen content in the air during the morning is twice that during the daytime.
Spend time in the outdoors – Spending time in the open refreshes the brain. I have personally seen that I am much more productive when working in the open. Staying in a conditioned environment will fog the mind and this is when a Parkinson’s patient already suffers with a fogged mind.
Brain stimulation exercises – A Parkinson’s patient needs to keep himself / herself engaged in activities such as reading, solving puzzles such as Sudoku, etc. This will keep the brain active and healthy. Of course, this needs to be done using a pencil and paper and not on the mobile.
Stay happy and joyful – This to me is the most important thing. Always keep in mind that nothing in this Universe is permanent, not even this disease. With perseverance, hard work and family support, it can easily be cured. If not cured, one can surely reach a point where s/he is self-dependant and can lead a happy and a peaceful life.

Researchers are in the exploratory phase of finding out how coconut oil can help people with Parkinson’s. Since coconut oil contains high concentrations of medium-chain triglycerides, some think that it can improve brain function and help your nervous system.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that consuming coconut oil could help with the tremors, muscle pain, and constipation that Parkinson’s causes. And the research we do have, which comes from animal studies, tells us that coconut oil may improve your lipid profile and antioxidant defenses when it’s ingested. Antioxidants are connected to Parkinson’s improvement for some people, so it’s not a stretch to think that coconut oil could help Parkinson’s symptoms.
For people that have tried coconut oil for Parkinson’s and are convinced that it works, it seems like cognitive function (what some call the “brain fog” of Parkinson’s) and memory are what improved. Other people say they experienced improved tremors and better muscle control. Some evidence suggests that coconut oil improves digestion for some people that use it. Coconut oil is antimicrobial and antifungal, and it can aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. This can help with digestion by improving nutrient absorption and promoting good gut bacteria. So it’s not surprising that people with Parkinson’s consume coconut oil to relieve constipation and help make them more regular. Adding coconut oil to food might make eating easier for people who have dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) because of Parkinson’s.
